The Spanish arrival in the Americas
In the early Medieval times the people of the old world had no idea of the existence of the new world ( though the vikings under Leif Erikson had landed in some areas of the American continent ) . This was soon to change and a vital key to this was the explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus .
In the late 1400 Christopher was trying to find someone to fund his campaign to find a way to travel to India and Asia via an uninterrupted eastward passage . When he first asked the Portuguese people for funding he was rejected and he then went on to ask Genoa and Venice but they like the Portuguese rejected his plan . Latter on the explorer arrived in Spain where he went on to ask the rulers of Spain Isabella and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1486 . Alas the people of Spain were to busy trying to expel the Moors from Spain and so they would not fund his campaign and he would have to wait until the Spanish had the money or had expelled the Muslims .
After biding his time Christopher had seen that his time had come when the last of the strongholds of the Muslims in Spain was captured , because of the massive victory the Spanish royal court decided to finance his journey . The Spanish then outfitted him with the three ships the Santa Maria , Inta and the Nina and then in August of 1492 the fleet captained by Columbus himself set of for India . He would spend 36 days at sea until he arrived at the Bahamian island in the Caribbean sea and he then claimed the island for Spain .
When he first arrived in America he had believed that he had actually arrived in India and thus he had given the people of the Americas the name Indians and as we now know he had actually landed in America and not India . After success Columbus would travel to the Americas on several occasions to try and bring great riches and wealth to the now expanding empire of Spain .
Christopher would leave a lasting legacy due to the fact that he had brought potatoes , tomatoes and corn back from the Americas and he was also pivotal in introducing the world to the food we know as chocolate . But his journeys also had a negative affect because he and the Spanish were to introduce many diseases to the people of America . Also his adventures would help the fledgling Spain become the dominate power in the world and this would lead to the golden age of the Spanish people and empire.
